MSM and Gout Have You Considered This?

Posted in Health & Fitness on October 6th, 2007

You may or may not have heard about the MSM and gout connection, but MSM is being used for many conditions. Many of them are conditions that affect the joints much like gout does. MSM stands for Methyl Sulfonyl Methane - a natural sulfur compound. Though this is much like traditional sulfur, you will be glad to know that the smell normally associated with sulfur is not present when you use this is a natural remedy for gout. There are on-going studies on this treatment, but it is safe to try for the most part and usually inexpensive.

What MSM and gout have in common are your joints and connective tissues. This substance is works to aid the body in building or repairing many essential proteins and some collagen that keeps skin and tissues supple and joints moving. It helps with the overall health of your joints, tendons and other similar tissues in the body.

At the same time, it can help with more than gout. MSM can aid in vitamin absorption, and you may find additional benefits are strong and healthy nails and hair. You may even find that taking it as recommended will help give your immune system a small boost. MSM also helps to reduce inflammation and pain and aids the liver in processing toxins.

MSM is often found in some of the foods that we eat, though in rather small doses. It comes in food items like milk, which probably has the highest amounts of MSN of all food sources. It is also in some meats and fish, and many fresh fruits and vegetables. Some of this is lost when the foods are cooked, so meats might fall off the list as a possible source of MSM, especially if you’re currently avoiding high purine foods. Thankfully, MSM is also available as a supplement in powered form, which you can add to drinks, or in capsule form that you can take like a pill. Alternatively, there are creams you can purchase that contain MSM, which can be applied to the effected joints.

When thinking of MSM and gout relief, you have to think in the long term. It is generally recommended to start out small with dosages that gradually increase. As with most natural supplements it can take a few weeks or months for levels to build up in the system properly to have the right effect. As far as supplements go, this might be one of the safest, but that does not mean you should take more than recommended. You should always talk with your doctor about what you are going to try so that they can give you some pointers, and even help you monitor the progress you may or may not be making.

What You Should Know About Acid Reflux And Back Pain

Posted in Health & Fitness on September 21st, 2007

Those suffering from back pain usually think that this type of pain is associated with muscular or skeletal problems exclusively. This might lead them through all types of testing and pain medications, only to find the problem is not getting any better, and in fact, might be getting worse. What isn’t always known is that there can be a connection between acid reflux and back pain, especially for those who have had GERD for a long time, and whose symptoms are not kept under control.

For the most part, the association between back pain and acid reflux is an indirect one, but unless that link is found, the condition may continue to get worse.

There is a lot of information about GERD and treatments, as well as things you can do to help with the problem. Though medications and dietary changes are the most common and helpful things you can do, there are other steps you can take that will help, but in return, may be contributing to back pain in some.

One common thing that has been shown to help with acid reflux is sleeping with your head and chest elevated to help keep acid from refluxing at night. This approach can be very successful, but if you do it wrong, you could be putting pressure on your back in the wrong way. This can lead to muscle strain and other problems that contribute to the aching pain in the back that some feel.

Sleeping on you left side also seems to improve acid reflux symptoms, however, sticking to this one sleeping position can lead to back pain as well.

Other times, back pain is simply caused by regular reflux pain when reflux is left untreated. When the pain becomes intense, it might feel like it is radiating around in to the back.

Generally, those who have their acid reflux under control, who are taking medications and have modified their diet, won’t feel back pain for this reason.

If you are sure there is no other reason for your back pain, you may want to consider it is related to your heartburn. The first thing you should do is to be sure that you have your acid reflux under control through the guidance of your doctor. This means taking any medications as directed and also learning to avoid those foods and beverages that cause your symptoms to flare.

After that, you can help your acid reflux and back pain by being sure you know what you are doing when you are trying to position your body as you sleep. Stuffing two pillows under your head is not the way to stop acid from flowing up the esophagus. This will only cause back pain. Instead, find a way to gently raise the mattress from underneath so the entire top of your torso is slight elevated. Some people also tend to slouch when the have acid reflux pain, and that not only makes the reflux worse in many cases, it can also contribute to back pain. With the proper lift of the mattress, and proper posture, back pain from acid reflux can be a thing of the past.

Curious About GERD Flax Natural Remedy?

Posted in Health & Fitness on September 14th, 2007

Most people have heard that flax is good for the body and forms part of a healthy diet, but they may not know what it is. Acid reflux sufferers may also not know that there are some who use a GERD flax remedy to help with the recurrence and pain associated with acid reflux, and all of the other problems that can come along with it.

When suffering with acid reflux or GERD there are medications that can bring relief as well as effective natural remedies. Though it is not certain that flax can help everyone with GERD, it’s a natural remedy that is safe for almost everyone to try if they wish to do so.

Flax is a flowering plant that has many uses within a variety of different sectors of manufacturing and agriculture. Most know it as a seed, or perhaps as an oil. Flax oil is something referred to as linseed oil.

One of the biggest benefits of flax is the omega-3 fatty acids. These have a variety of great benefits for the body and it’s a popular supplement many people take each day for various reasons. Flax can be great for any diet, and if it has the added benefit of helping with acid reflux, it is all the more important to find a way to incorporate it into your diet each day.

To understand how flax works for acid reflux, you have to understand what probiotics are. These are the good bacteria that are present in the digestive system that help keep things in balance. They also aid in digestion. If your levels of probiotics are out of balance, you may find your acid reflux is worse than it has ever been before. By taking flax oil, you can help balance the level of probiotics in your system for some relief. This, along with other measures, can help reduce the amount of acid that finds a way up your esophagus and even into your throat or lungs.

You may also know that if your good bacteria levels drop, food is not moving as quickly through the system as it should. If food is not moving through the digestive tract, it sits in the stomach for longer periods of time and this results in the stomach working to produce more acid.

Flax helps to get your bowels and upper intestines moving faster, which in turn allows the stomach to empty more quickly. Smaller and more frequent meals are a good idea as they can be digested at a normal speed rather than more slowly. This is how the GERD flax treatment can aid in some relief.

Before you decide you would like to take flax to see if it will help, you should know that there are some people who should not take it. If you fall into any of the following situations, be sure to talk with your doctor about a GERD flax remedy before you begin. People who have problems with narrowed intestines, or who have had blockage in the past may not fair well with flax. Those who have prostate problems and have any sort of problem with urination should ask a doctor first. Plus, pregnant or breast feeding women or anyone under the age of 18, or who has an allergy to any type of plants should use caution as well. Flax can decrease absorption of other medications, so bear that in mind as well.

Curing Gout Apnea

Posted in Health & Fitness on August 31st, 2007

Gout is a painful joint condition that is treatable and controllable. It is usually the result of a build up of uric acid in the body. When there is an excess of uric acid, the body must do something with it, so it deposits the uric acid wherever it can, forming as crystals in the joints. This is very painful, and can be pretty debilitating for many sufferers. You can imagine that this type of pain could cause a person to lose sleep, but for some, the issue becomes more serious. Some gout sufferers have problems with sleep apnea as well, and are searching for a way of curing gout apnea.

Sleep apnea on its own can go unnoticed, but it can be very problematic. The body is not breathing as it should at night, with short periods where a person may stop breathing all together.

Breathing usually resumes without the person knowing what happened, but this can have detrimental affects on the body. When it comes to gout, apnea may be an underlying reason, or might be the reason symptoms have worsened. Those with gout and apnea should consider a possible connection.

When a person has apnea and breathing problems, the body does not get the oxygen it needs on time, and carbon dioxide builds up in the body. Cells can not survive under those conditions, and they individually begin to die releasing purines as they do.

However, because the periods of where breathing stops are not too prolonged, this happens in small amounts each time, but when it does happen, the cell degeneration and death creates more purine.

This goes a long way towards raising uric acid levels within the body, and thus contributes to more crystal formation in the joints, and then of course, more gout pain.

If you suspect you have sleep apnea, you should talk to your doctor about how to confirm your suspicions either way. If you find out that this is a problem for you, you might meet the diagnosis with some mixed feelings. It can be hard to accept that you are having breathing problems while sleeping, but it also means that you may have found the reason why your gout feels out of control, even if you are taking steps to eat a proper diet and are taking medications if prescribed.

In some cases, there are natural steps you can take to help with sleep apnea. If you are carrying extra weight, losing it can help. Some people find that staying away from anything that alters the body like painkillers or alcohol will also help control sleep apnea. Sleeping on your side rather than on your back can decrease incidences of sleep apnea. This is because the most common problem with apnea is a collapse of the throat and other parts of the airways, making lying on the back not a good idea. It is hard to know how you are sleeping at night, but going to sleep on your side with pillows behind your back to stop you rolling over can help.

When searching for methods of curing gout apnea and related problems, some doctors may suggest surgery for really bad cases. Gout is not the only problem associated with sleep apnea, and many are much more serious. Apnea sufferers can have a higher risk of stroke, heart problems, and even death while sleeping. If your doctor suggests surgery, discuss the seriousness of your case, and the benefits and risks of having the surgery. In some cases, it could save your life with the added benefit of lessening bouts of painful gout.

How to Get Started With Homeopathy Crohns Relief

Posted in Health & Fitness on May 12th, 2007

Choosing Crohn’s-friendly foods isn’t the only way a sufferer can improve their condition, other treatments such as homeopathy crohns relief may also be beneficial for some. Homeopathy is a unique type of remedy that treats the person as a whole. Therefore, the type of remedy that is prescribed is based on a person’s mental and physical wellbeing. The treatments administered focus on ridding the person of their specific problems. Thus, no two people will be provided with the same treatments.

In order to receive proper homeopathy crohns treatment, you will need to visit a qualified homeopath to have your condition properly accessed. That being said, the following are five examples of homeopathic treatments you may be prescribed based on your symptoms:

Note: The vast majority of homeopathy treatments are derived from natural substances that come from minerals, plants and animals. A remedy is made by diluting the natural substance through a specific process without destroying its healing properties. Most remedies are extremely diluted, taken orally, and are available in tablet, pellet or liquid forms.

Argentum nitricum: This homeopathic crohns remedy is administered to those who suffer from an upset digestive system that is also accompanied by nervousness and/or anxiety. Such a person often experiences symptoms of nausea, bloating, tummy rumbling, flatulence and sudden, intense diarrhea with a greenish hue. Diarrhea may suddenly occur after eating excessive salty or sweet foods or directly after ingesting water. In addition, a person prescribed this treatment is also likely to be impulsive, expressive, and suffer from claustrophobia issues.

Asafetida: This homeopathy crohns substance is given to those who feel as if their entire digestive tract is constricted. The individual may feel as though they have a lump moving upwards from the stomach or have a bubble in their throat. Their abdomen generally feels inflated; however, the person has difficulty passing gas for relief. This person likely has painful bouts of constipation, explosive cases of diarrhea, and possibly regurgitates small amounts of food. This individual may have strong emotions and is quick to become worked up.

Colocynthis: An individual who is experiencing sharp pains and cramping in their abdomen or pubic bone that urges them to bend double or lie down is often prescribed this homeopathy crohns. The pain that is experienced usually worsens before diarrhea passes, after drinking water or eating fruit. Many of these symptoms are also triggered by emotions, especially anger.

Lilium tigrinum: This is usually administered to a person who is constipated throughout the day but is plagued with sudden diarrhea the next morning. This person tends to feel as if there is a lump in their rectum that feels worse when they stand. This person may develop haemorrhoids, and experience tightening in their chest. The symptoms are often triggered by strong emotions, and excitement that often accelerates into feelings of irritability or rage.

Podophyllum: This remedy for homeopathy crohns is often prescribed to those who suffer from abdominal pain and cramping, and have a sinking, empty feeling in their gut that is followed by very loose, and watery, foul-smelling diarrhea. The person may also experience constipation or bowel movements that feature pasty, yellow stool with mucus. This individual tends to feel worse in the early hours of morning and later feel weak, faint or headachy afterwards. An individual who suffers from these symptoms may also experience stiff joints and muscles.

Homeopathy crohns is generally safe when administered by a professional, especially remedies that have been extremely diluted. However, it is not uncommon for a person to feel worse during treatment. This usually only occurs for a brief period and is usually not uncommon. However, extreme or prolonged side effects such as worsening or no relief from symptoms should be brought to the attention of your health care provider.
Although homeopathy may be an ideal complimentary form of treatment for Crohn’s, it should not replace a doctor’s advice. In addition, if you have a serious case of Crohn’s with persistent symptoms, you may require medical aid for relief and to get the condition under control. Therefore, make sure you consult your health care provider about homeopathy crohns treatments before you begin.

Where to Find the Cheapest Flower Shops

Posted in Flower Shop on May 4th, 2007

If you’re in the market for flowers, especially if you plan on purchasing a whole bunch, it will be important to find the cheapest flower shops in your area. So once you find a shop that features low prices, make sure the quality of flowers aren’t low either.

When browsing flower shops, you’ll want to find out which ones offer the finest and freshest flowers. Shops that are next-door to a garden are usually a good bet – as they grow their flowers on site! Not only are their flowers fresher, but they are also cheaper because there is no middleman for these shops.

Similarly, flower shops that sell roses or other types of flowers that are still planted can also boast low prices. Some shops order flowers from a big plantation and unless they buy an extremely large amount of them, there is overhead, and thus the price to the customer is higher. Not to mention, these flowers have a chance to age and wither during the road trip over to the store. Shop attendants who pick the flower and cut it right in front of your eyes, are really preferable, as you can be sure of the quality.

Delivery services often are free of charge and even so, the surprise your loved one will feel when they receive a flower arrangement at their door is priceless. Just make sure delivery is on time and there is a refund policy for flowers that arrive in poor condition. If you ask about what vehicle the shop employs and what the window of time is between the flower picking and the final delivery, this can help you better pick a delivery service.

The Internet provides you with a vast amount of resources as well. Search for a shop or specific type of flower that you are interested in; you’ll find that browsing for flowers online is a surprisingly easy task. But because there is no florist on hand to answer your questions or assure you of the quality of the store’s products, make sure to investigate things, like the refund policy, on your own.

And of course, it’s always nice to support your local florist – if you develop a relationship with the workers at your nearby shop, you may be able to snag some nifty discounts.

Tips in Finding the Best Unique Gift Online

Posted in Unique Gifts on May 4th, 2007

In your hectic life, it seems that there is always an important date circled on your calendar. This month it’s a wedding, next month it’s a holiday, the following month it’s two birthdays, and so on. With these events comes the pressure of picking out a perfect gift specifically tailored to each individual. How can you come up with an original idea that is sure to be a hit? Well, the limitless potential of the internet makes choosing a unique gift as easy as ever. In this article, we’ll give you a few simple tips in finding the best unique gift online.

Before you log on and start surfing, you should have a general idea of what the recipient likes. This may seem like an obvious point, but many times people buy a gift just because they think it is cool, without ever actually thinking of the person for whom the gift is intended. So, it is crucial that you ask around about what the person likes to do, where they like to go, etc. Remember that everyone has interests, and your job as a shopper is to snoop around and find out what they are.

O.K., so let’s assume that you know everything there is to know about your Aunt Mary, who has a birthday coming up. You know that she likes to read, loves the opera, and enjoys fancy restaurants. Where do you begin? Well, the first thing to do is to take one of her interests and start investigating. So, in the case of our example, you would first type in the name of, say, her favorite author into a search engine. O.K., the first entry leads you directly to that author’s web site. Perfect. Now, while at the web site you discover that the author will personalize copies of his newest release and ship it out the next day. So in about a 5 minute span, you have already found one unique idea that you are sure Aunt Mary will like. The same thing goes for the opera and local restaurants. By typing keywords into a search engine (such as Google or Yahoo), you will be able to link to exactly the right items for Aunt Mary’s taste.

Another outstanding idea for finding a unique gift online is to try an auction site, such as ebay. These sites are great because they bring together thousands of merchants that offer almost anything you can imagine. You can search for any item or topic, and you will then be able to place bids on any product that you are interested in. So in the case of Aunt Mary, you should be able to find tickets to that new Broadway show she has just been dying to see. One word of caution however; sites such as ebay can be highly addictive! You may forget the real reason you logged on in the first place as you shop uncontrollably for yourself.

These are just a few simple tips in finding the best unique gift online. Remember, by focusing on your recipient’s hobbies and likes, you will easily be able to find that perfect something that is sure to score big.

Space Saving Ideas for Wooden Wine Racks

Posted in Wooden Wine Racks on May 4th, 2007

While we all know that a great wine collection deserves a great wine rack, it can often be hard to find adequate storage space. While you don’t want to hide your collection away in some closet, you would like to find a wine rack that is less encompassing. Is there any way to reach such a compromise? The answer is a resounding yes! In this article, we’ll provide you with some great space saving ideas for wooden wine racks that will show off your collection without taking over your home.

When looking for a wooden wine rack that is space friendly, the old saying “size matters” definitely holds true. The options available to you directly correlate to the size of your wine collection. For example, if you have a collection consisting of thousands of bottles, then you are simply going to have to devote a lot of space to housing your collection. However, collections as large as several hundred can be fashionably displayed without taking up too much room. Let’s take a closer look at some viable options.

With the recent boom in wine collecting, manufacturers have come up with some pretty innovative freestanding models that take up a minimum of space. These wine racks are made up of interconnecting shelves that fit one on top of the other for maximum storage in a limited area. In addition, many of these units allow for you to continue adding on as your collection grows. This eliminates the need to constantly buy bigger wine racks as the years go by.

While freestanding wine racks can make for a great conversation piece, wall mounted display kits can turn your collection into a work of art. Many of these display cubes can hold upwards of three hundred bottles, giving your collection ample room to grow. These wall displays are also great because they make choosing a wine very convenient, as they will be eye-level and easily accessible.

For those of you with smaller collections, contemporary wooden wine racks are perfect for keeping on a kitchen countertop. These racks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and most can comfortably hold up to 20 bottles at a time. When choosing one of these countertop wine racks, it is important to remember that you want to keep the rack as sheltered as possible (away from windows, stove, etc.). This will ensure that your wine retains its true flavor and texture, and it will also keep the main counter space available for other uses.

One final space saving idea for wooden wine racks pertains to larger collections. There are racks that are made in a “curved-corner” style, which allow for amazing space control as well as visibility. These wine racks are perfect for any basement area as the collection can be viewed flush against any two walls. This type of wine rack frees up the rest of the room for any other purpose.

There are more choices than ever before when it comes to choosing a wine rack that is both stylish and functional. The important thing to remember is to choose a wine rack that fits both your eye as well as your space constraints. By following this advice, you and your family will enjoy your growing wine collection for many years to come.

High Blood Pressure Signs You Should Be Aware Of

Posted in Health & Fitness on May 4th, 2007

There are high blood pressure signs you should be aware of, regardless if you are taking birth control pills or not.  However, for most high blood pressure sufferers, recognizing signs can be easier said than done.  The reason is because high blood pressure generally has no symptoms due to the fact that the basic warning signs associated with it are extremely vague.

Nevertheless, the following are the basic warning high blood pressure signs you should be aware of:
 Headaches
 Dizziness
 Nosebleeds
 Flushed face
 Fatigue.

As you can see, from the above list of symptoms, it is easy for someone to ignore or mistaken these symptoms as another problem.  This is why high blood pressure is commonly known as “the silent killer”, because for those who don’t receive regular blood pressure checkups, it usually isn’t until one experiences the more extreme symptoms that he/she seeks medical attention.

The following extreme high blood pressure signs occur if high blood pressure (blood pressure is equal to or greater than 140/90 mmHg.)  has been persistent, severe and left untreated for a long time.  The symptoms are usually the result of damage that has been done to the brain, eyes, kidney and heart.
They include:
 Severe unexplained headache
 Fatigue
 Restlessness
 Nausea
 Vomiting
 Shortness of breath
 Blurred vision
 Chest pain or shortness of breath after slight exertion

More extreme signs include:
 Eye damage and loss of vision
 Organ failure – kidneys and/or heart fail
 Heart attack
 Stroke or a transient ischemic attack (better known as a mini stroke)
 Aneurysm
 Peripheral arterial disease
 Brian swelling – this is rare but can cause drowsiness and coma.

Note: if you are experiencing any of the above extreme signs visit your hospital emergency department immediately.

How can high blood pressure be treated?
First of all, regardless if you have high blood pressure signs or not, always have your blood pressure checked annually, and inform you doctor if you have a family history of hypertension, kidney failure, heart attack or stroke, as this increases your risk.

That being said, high blood pressure can be managed thorough lifestyle changes, but depending on the severity of the condition, some individuals may benefit from a combination of lifestyle changes and medical treatment.

Lifestyle changes -
Food - Limit and eliminate food products that encourage high blood pressure including, table salt, cooking salt, salty and processed foods, foods high in saturated fat, sugary foods and drinks, caffeine and alcohol.
Quit smoking – Nicotine in cigarettes causes the blood vessels to constrict, and increases blood pressure.
Exercise – Physical activity actually works to reduce blood pressure while inactivity increases blood pressure.  Exercise is a great way to keep your body healthy and strong, and is a fantastic way to lose and maintain a good weight.
Lose weight – If you are exceptionally overweight or obese you are putting excess pressure on your heart.  You must reduce your weight by incorporating regular exercise and healthy eating habits in your lifestyle.  Avoid crash diets as these can only make your condition worse.

Medication –
If your doctor feels you require medication to help control your high blood pressure signs, you may be prescribed medication to help relieve the stress that is being placed on your heart, organs and blood vessels including: diuretics (water pills), beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), angiotensin–converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, Alpha–blockers, etc.

Remember although medications can help, lifestyle changes are essential for controlling high blood pressure.

It is vital that you realize high blood pressure can go undetected for years and cause no symptoms while still damaging the blood vessels, heart and other organs.  Therefore, if you suspect you have high blood pressure signs, are unsure if you do, or even if you don’t, always visit your health care provider annually to have your blood pressure checked.  Monitoring your blood pressure, and taking action to control it when it’s high, is the only way you can protect yourself from the silent killer.
